Ethics in Healthcare: Ethical Decision Making in Modern Medicine

This course provides an overview of Clinical Ethics that is designed to provide physicians with crucial information about how modern clinical ethics analysis and problem-solving should function in the hospital and clinic setting. The modules progress from discussing the process of identifying, analyzing, and resolving ethical problems to the ethical issues that routinely arise with end-of-life care, including the use of Advance Directives. the fundamentals of the informed consent process. The final module in the course discusses the purpose and functioning, as well as the value, of a hospital ethics committee and the useful services that the committee can provide.

1. Identify the ways to effectively approach, identify, critically analyze and resolve ethical problems in the clinical setting.
2. Recognize the range of common ethical issues that arise in end-of-life care including specific issues that arise with advance directives and requests for non-beneficial treatment.
3. List the crucial elements of a valid and effective informed consent, including recognizing the appropriate standards of disclosure and misconceptions about standards of disclosure of medical information in the informed consent process
4. Describe the function and purpose of the hospital based ethics committee and the services that may be provided, including recognizing the steps involved and the goals to be achieved in the case consultation process.
