Sustainability in Healthcare

This course addresses sustainability and the impact of healthcare on climate change and human health.  Sustainability initiatives in the hospital setting can improve patient health as well as staff well-being while also reducing the carbon footprint of the hospital and providing cost savings. Waste reduction, reprocessing, and recycling initiatives also have a positive impact on health care delivery in the setting of supply and equipment shortages, which have been prevalent since the pandemic.

This course reviews the impacts of hospital waste and climate change on human health as well as the environmental and carbon footprint of a hospital. The course discusses strategies that hospital leadership and individual providers can implement to reduce waste and carbon emissions, resulting in both cost savings and a smaller environmental footprint.

Clinicians will learn practical and systemic practices they can initiate to help ameliorate the environmental impact of hospitals.
