Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the rights of patients in custody that have the capacity to complete Advance Directives as well as make their own decisions about medical care
  2. Clarify the right of the incapacitated patient in custody to have the appropriate familial Proxy or designated HCS contacted for consents and decisions about care (within the parameters of the security protocol)
  3. Discuss the potential vulnerability of the incapacitated patient in custody within the hospital system
  4. Set forth the process to follow for communicating with family when the patient is in custody

The University of Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

 

Credit Designation

Successful completion of this CME activity [, which includes participation in the evaluation component], enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME [and Self-Assessment] requirement(s) of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program.
