Overview

The contemporary management of heart failure is characterized by evolving strategies to combine newer approaches based on research advances with well established evidence-based standards of care. This educational activity is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the current strategies for the treatment of heart failure. Course faculty will review cutting edge approaches to diagnosis and classification of this syndrome. They will provide techniques and tips related to pharmacological treatment, device therapy and surgical interventions for heart failure. The material presented will have an interdisciplinary focus and will be of interest to physicians and other health care professionals who care for patients with heart failure.

The meeting is driven by expert faculty presentations, extensive panel discussions and interactive audience involvement. We aim to describe integration of current, novel drug therapies, application of devices and procedures to optimize outcomes and quality of life in patients with heart failure.

Target Audience
Specialties - Cardiology
Professions - Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Pharmacist, Physician (DO), Physician (MD), Physician Assistant

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (17.25 hours), Non-Physician Attendance Certificate (17.25 hours)

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss the clinical profile, current definition of heart failure and the concept of pre-heart failure.
  2. Apply appropriate strategies to optimize use of current and novel drug therapy of heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.
  3. Understand the latest findings concerning pharmacological approaches to heart failure with mid-range or preserved ejection fraction in key clinical phenotypes including patients with obesity
  4. Describe current therapeutic strategies for cardiac amyloid and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  5. Discuss management of advanced heart failure with mechanical circulatory support and surgical approaches including left ventricular assist devices and cardiac transplantation
  6. Discuss strategies for implementation of hemodynamic monitoring, novel device therapies and measurement of urine sodium to control congestion and improve outcomes in patients with heart failure
  7. Understand options for electrophysiological interventions to address risk of sudden death and atrial arrhythmias in patients with heart failure

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Florida College of Medicine and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill - Division of Cardiology.
