This course equips physicians with a basic understanding of the potential of Patient Blood Management to enhance patient outcomes, reduce transfusion-related complications, and lower healthcare costs while promoting patient safety and empowerment. In addition, this information is essential for senior hospital leadership to appreciate in order to gain commitment and support to implement a PBM program. In addition, this course provides a practical overview of the implementation of a PBM program.

1. Recognize the benefits and limitations of red blood cell transfusion
2. Contrast the benefits of a conservative versus a liberal red blood cell transfusion strategy

5. Identify treatment options within the Patient Blood Management bundle to manage and preserve a patient’s own blood
