Obtaining Clinical Data

Healthcare systems generate enormous amounts of data while treating patients, which promises opportunities for significant data-driven operational and quality improvement opportunities to enhance the quality of patient care and patient safety. However, obtaining these data and completing analysis, especially when utilizing large data analytics methods, can take months and even years.  This course introduces easily accessible resources available to UF Health stakeholders to support data-driven quality improvement, patient safety, and healthcare delivery. The data and software tools presented in this course also enable the practice of artificial intelligence methods learned in other QPSi courses.

Quality improvement, patient safety, and delivering care are often driven by Electronic Health Record (EHR) data analytics. However, access to EHR data is typically not quick or straightforward due to privacy and workload challenges. Moreover, the analysis of large amounts of EHR data is equally challenging. This course presents resources available to UF Health stakeholders that enable quick access to EHR data as well as tools to perform data analytics without knowledge of advanced analytics techniques and programming skills.

Syllabus and Instructor Information 

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance Certificate (1.50 hours)

1. Recognize the structure of the OMOP common data model (CDM) and the benefits of using OMOP for clinical research and quality improvement projects.
2. List the steps to prepare a request to access UF Health datasets in OMOP and its companion tool, ATLAS, and to locate resources to further develop their analytics skills using OMOP CDM and ATLAS.
3. Recognize the steps to create a cohort of interest and examine cohort characteristics using ATLAS, a web-based tool for data exploration and analytics using OMOP CDM as its back-end database.
