Overview

Interprofessional teamwork is a key to safe, high-quality patient care.  Interprofessional teamwork occurs when multiple different types of health professionals work collaboratively with patients and their families to ensure safe, high-quality patient care. In this course, learners will acquire knowledge about the value of interprofessional teamwork for patients and health care professionals, as well as fundamental concepts for how best to engage in effective interprofessional teams. Concepts and tools from the team science literature and the TeamSTEPPS healthcare team training framework will be used.

Characteristics of effective teams will be discussed, including psychologically safe environments, shared leadership, shared mental models and situation monitoring, and task assistance.  Best practices in communication, including specific communication tools, will be presented. Through this course, health care professionals will learn how to implement, lead, and model effective interprofessional teamwork to ensure safe, high-quality patient care. 
Clinicians will gain valuable insights into ensuring high-quality interprofessional teamwork to improve the quality of care, patient outcomes, and staff satisfaction.

  1. Recognize the value of interprofessional teamwork in health care
  2. Identify key characteristics of effective teams
  3. Identify effective communication practices for use in an interprofessional health care team
