Delivering Corticosteroid Treatment for Patients With Uveitis-associated Macular Edema

Overview

This program will be 1 credit hour and the intended audience is retina specialists and comprehensive ophthalmologists. The program is a round table discussion among three experts focusing on ME secondary to noninfectious uveitis, the need to treat this condition promptly and aggressively, clinical results that have been obtained with the delivery of corticosteroids to the SCS, and best practices for injection and patient monitoring. Injection technique and efficacy and safety outcomes from clinical cases will be used to place the discussions in a real-world context.

  • David Eichenbaum, MD, FASRS, partner and Director of Research at Retina Vitreous Associates of Florida in Tampa, FL.
  • Sunil Srivastava, MD, uveitis and vitreoretinal specialist at the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Summarize risk factors for the development of NIU and associated ME as well as evidence supporting the need to promptly treat these conditions.
  2. Critically review drug delivery routes used in the treatment of uveitic ME and other ocular diseases, including their benefits and challenges.
  3. Interpret results of key trials examining SCS injections for the treatment of ocular diseases, particularly uveitic ME, and how new data may eventually influence practice.
  4. Describe proper techniques for SCS injection, solutions to common treatment challenges, and best practices for patient education and monitoring.
