Overview
Journal Club for Burn Surgery and Critical Care Medicine is a half hour long monthly meeting of burn care clinicians and allied health professionals to discuss relevant literature to the treatment of burns and ICU patients. It provides a forum to discuss the evidence for best clinical practices and share opinions regarding these care topics. This forum allows for the discussion of landmark papers that have shaped how we practice medicine today as well as new and emerging literature that may affect our clinical practice. It also provides an opportunity for learners to critically analyze research methodologies and outcomes. Recurrent journal clubs helps to foster an environment where we can increase our comfort analyzing literature, encourage the exchange of ideas, and advance the practice of evidence-informed practice.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Review the pathophysiology of metabolic stress in the critically ill patient
  2. Appraise the data regarding ideal timing and dosing of nutrition in ICU
  3. Formulate nutrition monitoring strategies for ICU patients
  4. Understand the significance of burn hypermetabolism and how this affects how we provide nutrition in burn patients.
  5. Review the impact nutrition has on outcomes in the burn patient, including mortality and functional outcomes.
  6. Explore how nutrition in the burn patient and the findings of this study differ from other literature regarding nutrition in non-burned critically ill patients.

The University of Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
