Overview
This workshop, targeted to Emergency Medicine providers, will discuss an evidence-based framework to the management of patients with non-traumatic dental pain. Participants will also receive hands-on instruction in providing dental anesthesia and performing incision and drainage of oral abscesses. The first part of the session will involve a lecture on relevant anatomy, evidence-based management of atraumatic dental pain, and overview of anesthesia and I&D techniques. Subsequently, a clinical decision support tool for dental pain management, incorporating practice guidelines, will be introduced. In the final portion of the workshop, participants will receive hands-on instruction from a Dentist or Oral Surgeon involving landmarking for anesthesia administration on the skull, landmarking on peers, anesthesia on a mannequin, and incision and drainage technique on a patient-simulating model.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize updated evidence-based prescribing indications for antibiotics and analgesics for patients with acute dental pain and pulpal and periapical emergencies
  2. Successfully administer maxillary and mandibular local anesthesia using standard techniques on a high-fidelity model and evaluate patient pain control.
  3. Perform incision and drainage procedures for intra-oral abscesses on a high-fidelity model
  4. Apply a clinical decision support tool for dental pain

The University of Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
